Proof Of Concept Available

Inspired by the isolation of lockdown, I missed being able to go out into nature and feed the animals. The irony of my first draft of it being finished almost exactly as the lockdown is being eased here is not lost on me.

This came about as the result of just trying to learn how to use Unity and Blender. I'd been following various tutorials, and I started bringing them together to craft what you currently see in the game.

The current release represents roughly 2 months of work (including general learning), probably around 100 hours worth of effort. There's a number of things that were put in and subsequently taken out, the fish pathfinding for example has had 3 complete rewrites.

I did have plans for an actual level structure and progression to the game, but this was starting to take up all the time I could allocate to game dev, and there are other ideas I want to start playing around with to.

While it is more of a "demo" of an idea, rather than an actual game, I went back and forth about whether to put decoration in the level. In the end I decided it distracted too much, and I preferred the sparseness of the level. This led me to putting other "background" fish into the level to try and give more life to the game, which I think works quite well. As well as adding ripples to the water when the fish move.

It's obviously not in a state that offers much in the way of replayability, but I thought I'd upload the current version as it's in a playable state, and maybe someone will enjoy it.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • The fish sometimes get stuck at the water's edge
  • The fish sometimes miss the bait or do 360 spins instead of heading towards it
  • The freezing/growth doesn't get reset when restarting the level
  • The inventory text stayed up once after closing the inventory... But then never again...
